How To Finish The Salar de Uyuni in Chile

How to get from Bolivia to Chile through the Salar de Uyuni

It is possible to finish the Salar de Uyuni tour in San Pedro de Atacama. This makes an expensive, but fully worth it tour in the Salar de Uyuni much better for the value. Otherwise, you would need to pay for transport separately to head towards Chile.

Almost all companies offer the option to drop you at the border of chile and Bolivia. Tour operators are not allowed to go through the border and they drop you at a specific zone to cross the border. You need to go through the Bolivian customs; Bolivia charges a 25 USD tax for international departures which usually needs to be paid in Bolivianos.

Make sure you don’t give all your Bolivianos away in tip. We felt bad having to ask a part of it back from our tour guide since we couldn’t have crossed otherwise.

Once the Bolivian customs are crossed a bus will take you to San Pedro de Atacama. You will need to go through the Chilean custom control. They scan your luggages and it all goes really smoothly. You are now in San Pedro de Atacama; the most expensive town on the western side of South-America – Or mayby not, but the shock from Bolivian prices to the Chilean one is hard to digest.

Tip for San Pedro: Have USD money on you, there are only a few ATM in town and they only get refilled once a week. People line up in front of them and they usually run out of money within the hour.

Here is the path that will take you to Chile

If you leave from Tupiza it is the same path*Bolivia salar uyuni to chile
