Machu Picchu is the most well known destination of Peru and all South America. In Quechua, Machu Picchu means ”Old Peak” or ”Old Person Peak.” At an altitude of 2500 meters (8000 feet) above sea level, reaching it might be exhausting for many. By far the most iconic site of the Inca Civilization it was built for the Inca Emperor Pachacuti (1438–1472). Forgotten for centuries it received the international attention it deserved in 1911 after it was discovered by hikers who saw ruins from the top of a nearby mountain.
